Make your Great Escape in Shropshire too

With some of the best driving roads in the UK on their doorsteps, it’s a surprise that until now Shropshire residents have been denied the chance to hire a cool classic car and hit the road. All that has changed now with the launch of Great Escape Classic Car Hire’s new Shropshire fleet.
Now locals and tourists can choose from some of the greatest classic cars of the 1970s to 1990s, including convertibles, coupes and saloons. The cars are available to hire to virtually anyone with a driving licence aged between 25 and 75 and prices start at just £195 for 24 hours use. The cars are conveniently based in picturesque Ryton XI Towns, just off the A5.
The new site in Shropshire is the first of its kind in the area, despite the preponderance of fantastic scenery and driving roads within a short drive from Shrewsbury and Telford. It is part of the growing Great Escape Classic Car Hire network, which operates a fleet of 40 classic cars from sites in Worcestershire, Yorkshire, Suffolk, Dorset and now Shropshire. Each local site is generally operated by classic car enthusiasts who want to share their cars with local car fans. The cars are generally hired for weekends away, birthdays, weddings and anniversaries on a self drive basis.
“Shropshire is one of the loveliest counties in England and is a great jumping off point to visit the Welsh Borders, Snowdonia and the Welsh coast,” explains Graham Eason of Great Escape Classic Car Hire. “It is surprising that nobody has offered classic cars for hire before. We have introduced a range of cars that provide a cross-section of coupes, convertibles and saloons with good value, all-inclusive pricing.”
The Great Escape fleet is available to hire by the day, weekend or week. All prices include a full 24 hours use for every day booked, unlimited mileage, comprehensive insurance for one driver (extra drivers can be added at low cost) and full UK AA breakdown service.
Great Escape has a fleet of self drive and chauffeur hire classic cars from the 1930s to the 1990s including coupes, convertibles and saloons from Bentley, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Jensen, Rolls Royce and Morris as well as Porsche. The company was founded four years ago by Graham Eason and is now the largest classic car hire company in the UK. Classic car hire starts at £125 for 24 hours and every hire day includes a full 24 hours use, unlimited mileage, insurance and breakdown cover. For more details visit, call 01527 893733 or email

Drive the best ever Alfas - as voted by you

When we read at Great Escape Classic Car Hire that Alfisti - Alfa fans to you and me - had voted the Alfa Spider and Alfasud their third and fifth favourite Alfa Romeos of all time we had to agree. Since we started Great Escape four years ago Alfa Romeos have been a central part of our fleet. We now have three Alfas - although our Alfasud is not for hire any more - and they remain amongst our most popular cars.
The Alfa Romeo poll was organised to celebrate Alfa Romeo's centenary and appears on the dedicated Centenary website at
Great Escape has two Alfa Romeo Spiders for hire in the UK - one in Suffolk and one in Worcestershire, ideal for the Cotswolds. The cars are beautiful and elegant two seater sports cars that are very easy to drive and ideal for year-round touring thanks to their good quality hoods, excellent heaters and easy driving style.

High praise for Alfa Romeo from the other AR

AROnline, the very popular hub for news, stories and discussion of British cars, recently borrowed the Great Escape Classic Car Hire Alfasud for a day to put it through its paces.
The site's News Editor, Clive Goldthorp, got the idea for testing the Alfasud after chatting to chassis engineers at MG. That led to a test of the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta and a decision to revisit the definitive Alfa hatchback to see how they compare. Clive's article can be read here.
The article is full of praise for the Alfasud's handling and charisma, characteristics that have always made it popular with Great Escape's owner Graham Eason, who has owned several Alfasuds. Alfa Romeo cars have been part of the Great Escape Classic Car Hire fleet since the business was started 4 years ago.

Great Escape stars at Jaguar Drivers Club event

Great Escape Classic Car Hire's beautiful Old English White Jaguar E Type convertible was one of the star attractions at the recent Jaguar Drivers Club national event held at Althorp House in Northamptonshire. The car was provided by Great Escape for the Footman James stand as part of a competition giveaway by the insurer involving a weekend prize package developed by Great Escape.
Footman James ran the competition exclusively for Jaguar Drivers Club members to win a weekend away, with accommodation, in one of Great Escape's fleet of classic cars based in the Cotswolds. The competition winner received their prize at the show and the E Type was paraded around the show ground.
"We have developed a unique range of weekend getaway packages through our Getaway Driver brand," explains Graham Eason of Great Escape. "We were able to provide Footman James with a complete weekend package prize involving our cars and our local accommodation providers.
"We are very pleased to be associated with Footman James and the Jaguar Drivers Club."

Great Escape Reaches Regional Tourism Awards Shortlist

It is beginners luck for Great Escape Classic Car Hire, which has been named as one of four companies shortlisted for the Best Tourism Experience category in the Heart of England Excellence in Tourism Awards 2010. These are the first awards that the company has ever entered in its four year history and the small family firm faced stiff competition from large regional tourism experiences to reach the shortlist.

The Heart of England Best Tourism Experience recognises high performance in customer care, service quality and marketing. Great Escape impressed the judges with its partnership approach, working with local restaurants and accommodation and activity providers to create complete weekend breaks for customers under its Getaway Driver brand.

Great Escape Classic Car Hire was set up 4 years ago by Graham Eason with just two cars. Today the company has a fleet of over 50 classic vehicles operating from four sites in Worcestershire, Suffolk, Yorkshire and Dorset. When Graham was made redundant from his day job working for a construction company he was able to focus full time on the business and it has grown significantly in the last 12 months. Great Escape is now the largest classic car hire company in the UK and a leading provider of cars to TV, film and advertising companies.

“We are over the moon to reach the shortlist,” says Graham Eason of Great Escape. “From day one we have tried to do something different – a different choice of cars, higher standards of presentation and service and high standards of vehicle preparation and maintenance. It seems that the judges were also impressed by that.

“We have had to work hard to combat the effects of the recession. By working with local partners to create complete weekend packages and increasing our range of cars we’ve managed to buck the downturn.”

Great Escape provides classic cars on a self drive basis for weekend and weekday getaways. The company has a fleet of over 50 cars at four locations, ranging from a 1957 Morris Minor Traveller to a 1967 Aston Martin DB6. Great Escape has also invested significantly in modern classics from the 1980s, including models familiar to fans of Ashes to Ashes, Minder and The Professionals.

Great Escape was founded in 2006 by Graham Eason to combine his interest in classic cars with his experience in marketing. The business has grown through development of its fleet and through acquisition, in 2009 taking over the former Grand Touring Club business in Suffolk.

Classic car hire starts at £145 for 24 hours and every hire day includes a full 24 hours use, unlimited mileage, insurance and breakdown cover. For more details visit, call 01527 893733 or email
